Job Description

Four (4) Temporary Full-Time Paramedic Commanders, Nipissing District Paramedic Services, NBRHC – North Bay The North Bay Regional Health Centre has the responsibility for the direct delivery of land ambulance services for the City of North Bay and surrounding area. This Emergency Medical Service system currently provides Primary Care and Advanced Care Paramedic level of service to approximately 19,000 calls per year. Reporting directly to the Deputy Chief of Operations and Quality Assurance, this position will be responsible for the on-shift supervision of operations and Paramedic activities within the District. The Paramedic Commander provides supervision with Paramedics and operators, supervises day-to-day operations of the Emergency Medical Services for the District of Nipissing in accordance with legislated standards, regulations, NBRHC Vision and Values, Policies and Procedures. Further responsibilities of this position will include but are not limited to:  Reviews and evaluates patient-care documentation, provides remedial assistance/coaching and monitors response times, investigates incidents and accidents and reports findings to management  Reviews/ investigates routine occurrences and complaints and prepares reports as required.  Coordinates staff replacements and call-backs ensuring adequate staffing levels in conjunction with Ambulance Program Assistant, assigning work, performing disaster planning activities  Completes and/or prepares a variety of documents, assist with implementation of return to work plans, patient documentation and special program updates/reports.  Provides emergency response in an RRU (Rapid Response Unit) capacity as a Primary Care or Advanced Care Paramedic providing supervision and support when required  Respond to major events (MCI, disaster response, terrorism event) as Initial Incident Commander  Completes district stock, ensuring adequate stock levels and required equipment.  Liaison with CACC in a duty officer capacity on shift  Oversees and assists in performing general maintenance tasks to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition. This may include replacing parts, disposing of biomedical waste per procedure, restock medical supplies, preventative maintenance plans and monitor equipment operation to maintain efficiency and safety.  Ensures staff comply with Labour Laws, Health & Safety Act, Ambulance Act, Coroners Act, Mental Health Act and Highway Traffic Act correcting and reporting non-compliance to the Deputy Chief(s)  Performs public relations activities, presenting information, meeting with allied agencies/public organizations and promoting Emergency Medical Services  Provides input into the negotiation of collective agreements and policy/procedure development  Makes routine and non-routine decisions relating to operations staff, services, facilities and equipment referring unusual situations to the Deputy Chief(s)  Provides internal client service to peers/co-workers throughout the organization  Provides input and recommendations for remedial assistance, training and development for paramedics to the Quality Assurance Commander  Liaison with staff within the Base Hospital, Fire Department. Police and Community Partners to provide service and ensuring good working relations

Qualifications

 Post-secondary completion (i.e. Emergency Medical Care Attendant) and a minimum of 5 years as a certified Paramedic and related supervisory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience  Certification as a Primary Care Paramedic or Advanced Care Paramedic in Ontario is required  BCLS required  Recent training in IMS or incident management is an asset  Valid Class “F” drivers’ license and no criminal record 3-5 years  Knowledge of the Ambulance Act, Health & Safety Act and Communicable Disease Standards  General knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act, the Coroner’s Act and the Mental Health Act  Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Outlook and the internet  Good communication skills to deal effectively with all levels of staff within the organization, as well as with suppliers, promote Emergency Medical Services, investigate complaints/patient treatment, reports findings to Manager, order supplies and work with community groups to improve visibility  Ability to operate a computer and related software (15% of the time), as well as a telephone/cell phone, fax, printer, oxygen equipment, ambulance equipment, photocopier, portable radio and work tools  Analytical thinking skills to break down simple and complex tasks to manage resources, resolve problems, maintain vehicles and ensure continuous provision of service  Versatility to adapt tactics to a constantly changing work environment due to unpredictable situations related to emergency conditions/services  Willingness to train and strive towards continuous improvement  Ability to collaborate with co-workers, other departments and external agencies  Demonstrated commitment to personal growth and development.  Must be able to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in our organization  Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset. Criminal Reference Check including the Vulnerable Sector Check: recent within three (3) months is a requirement
