Job Description

Middlesex-London Paramedic Service (MLPS) is currently accepting applications for the position of Deputy Chief – Operations. Reporting to the Chief, Middlesex-London Paramedic Service (MLPS) you will manage the operational areas of the Middlesex-London paramedic system. Accountable for on-site management, day-to-day operational control and supervision of MLPS, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring balanced ambulance coverage to all communities served by MLPS (this includes staff and vehicle availability); ensuring rapid response to all requests for routine, emergency and non-emergency ambulance services in a cost effective manner. This role is expected, under the general direction of the Chief, and within guidelines such as the Ambulance Act and Regulations, the Public Health Act, Radio Act (Canada) policies, procedures and Collective Agreements, to exercise these duties and authorities using prudent judgment for the planning and scheduling of service delivery.

Knowledge, Experience, and Qualifications • Must possess and maintain a valid Class “F” Ontario Driver’s License; • Advanced understanding of the Ontario Paramedic Service business; • Highly developed skills in labour relations, negotiations and conflict resolution with the ability to develop positive internal and external relationships. Demonstrated ability to express ideas effectively, verbally and in writing; • Exemplary knowledge of the legislative acts, regulations and bodies that guide Paramedic Services; • Exemplary knowledge of the medical and emergency service partners within the Ontario system; • Exemplary knowledge of current health and emergency services issues in Ontario; • Advanced knowledge of financial and business management, property/fleet management, training and information technology; • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a management position with a large paramedic service, in addition to a minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience; • Possess and maintain AEMCA status and all applicable qualifications for Paramedics in Ontario, as determined by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) – Required; • The position requires the incumbent to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance – Condition of Employment; • All required immunizations are up-to-date; • Advanced understanding of paramedic service operations, performance objectives and health care quality management best practices; • Solid understanding of the investigations and complaint process; • Ability to exercise superior judgment, tact and discretion in dealing with sensitive and complex situations; • Ability to motivate and train staff as well as monitor performance. Education • University degree in Health Sciences, Business Administration, Public Administration – Required; • Master’s degree in Health Sciences, Business Administration, or Public Administration – Preferred; • Minimum of Primary or Advanced Care Paramedic – Preferred.
