Job Description

The Shift Superintendent facilitates a culture where accountability, initiative, innovation, integrity and communication are valued. The Shift Superintendent provides general day to day leadership, over-sight and support to paramedics to ensure regulatory and service responsibilities are delivered as appropriate; acts as the Peterborough County/City Paramedics (PCCP) lead with regard to in-coming communications; carries out day to day administrative tasks; and assists the PCCP management team with operating tasks. The Shift Superintendent is a certified paramedic, maintaining full PCP or ACP certification. This position reports to the Deputy Chief of Operations. Shift Assignment: Shifts are assigned on a rotating basis and will include days, evenings, nights and weekends. As operating needs change, shift schedules may also change. In the event management elects to change the shift assignment, superintendents will be provided no less than 60 days’ notice. However, in order to provide emergency coverage a Shift Superintendent may be assigned an alternative shift for a period of no more than two weeks, without a 60 day notice.

Qualifications

• College Diploma or University Degree in paramedicine or related field; • Knowledge of legislation including the Ambulance Act, Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Ministry of Health policies, procedures, guidelines and specifications related to Ambulance dispatch, Base Hospitals, equipment and supplies; • Meets or is able to meet criteria to be employed as a paramedic in Ontario in accordance with the Ambulance Act including but not limited to; o Certified as EMCA or AEMCA; o Valid Ontario Class “F” Driver’s License or equivalent; o Current certification as a paramedic in Ontario through Base Hospital or ability to acquire; • Computer Skills in Microsoft Office Suites and other Computer software programs; • Significant experience in the provincial ambulance system, gained by working as a Primary Care Paramedic or Advanced Care Paramedic; • Supervisory experience in a unionized environment preferred; • Demonstrated experience in leading, coaching, guiding to inspire and motivate employees; • Interest, aptitude and demonstrated ability in specialized paramedic project work such as: logistical and equipment research; protocol development and training initiatives; community programs and education.
